AI and Humanity, a Paradigm Shift

Artificial intelligence (AI) is providing economic benefits to humanity in a wide range of fields and through various mechanisms, and this trend is expected to accelerate in the future. Even in a world where humans coexist with AI, one adage remains true: “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” Alongside economic benefits, corresponding risk factors inevitably exist. Raymond Kurzweil predicted that artificial general intelligence (AGI)—surpassing the intelligence of an individual human—would be achieved by 2029, and that the technological singularity, at which AI matches and exceeds human capabilities and intelligence, would be reached by 2045 (Kurzweil, 2005). AI thus represents both an opportunity and a threat to humanity.
This report explores a variety of topics centered on the interaction between AI and humans, with the aim of providing insights into how humans and AI can coexist in future societies.
First, the report examines human–AI interaction. Interaction between humans and AI is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and among its many dimensions, emotional interaction has emerged as a particularly important area of research. This report reviews the current state of emotional human–AI interaction and discusses key trends and future prospects in this field. In addition, it examines the social applications of AI.
Next, the report considers changes in human roles and values. Through interaction with AI, humans may gain opportunities to become more deeply human, which in turn may prompt a reassessment of intrinsic human values.
Finally, the report analyzes technological development and its social impacts. The social application of AI generates positive effects such as increased productivity and improved accessibility. At the same time, it raises concerns including job displacement and threats to personal data privacy, underscoring the need for ongoing discussion. Furthermore, advances in AI technology give rise to a range of ethical issues, which become increasingly complex as they intersect with legal and social response systems that evolve more slowly than technological innovation.
