On July 10, 2025, a book concert titled “A Political Economy Perspective on Public Debt” was held.
This event examined the issue of public debt from a political economy perspective beyond conventional economic indicators, offering an in-depth discussion on the structural factors behind the expansion of national debt and its broader implications. Professor 김영신 emphasized that rising public debt is a recurring phenomenon driven by political incentives and information asymmetry. He highlighted the need to legislate fiscal rules, enhance transparency in policy decision-making, and manage public finances based on the principles of a free market economy.
In the discussion session, 김대철, former Head of the Daegu Metropolitan Government Fiscal Review Committee, drew on his extensive policy experience to shed light on complex issues such as intergenerational conflicts surrounding public debt and the political drivers of tax expenditures. He underscored the importance of institutional measures—particularly the legal codification of fiscal rules and greater transparency in policy decisions—to curb the repeated expansion of fiscal spending and the accumulation of public debt.
We sincerely thank everyone who participated in the event.
